Holiday Weekend Promises Bounty of Events
Acting as the official kick-off to summer, Memorial Day weekend in the Northwoods will offer a number of family-friendly activities ranging from sidewalk sales to classic snowmobiles on display to waterski shows.
Festivities will kick off in Three Lakes as the Demmer library puts on its Memorial Day Weekend Used Book Sale in the lower level of the library Saturday, May 24, from 9:30 a.m. until noon. A wide selection of adult fiction and nonfiction, youth, children’s, hardcover, and paperback books will be available.
In addition to the books, a limited number of audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes will be available. All hard cover books, books on CD, DVDs and CDs, trade paperbacks, books on cassette, and VHS tapes will be a$1 or shoppers can choose to fill-a-book-bag for $10, while book bag supplies last.
Book sales at the Demmer library are managed by the Friends of the Library and proceeds help support special library programs and functions. Also in Three Lakes, the Aqua Devils Waterski Team also will host an open house May 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free to attend and will take place at 854 Golf Course Loop.
Saturday evening, Three Lakes Center for the Arts will kick off its summer concert season at 7:30 p.m. Folk musician John Stano will bring his repertoire of Americana, folk and contemporary acoustic music selections to the audience. He will be supported by opening act John P. Higgins. Cost is $20 per ticket for adults or $10 for youths younger than 13. Tickets can be purchased here.
St. Germain
St. Germain has a number of activities planned for the weekend, beginning with the welcome home party for Chief St. Germain May 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held at St. Germain Chamber Park and host a day of food, fun and activities, along with the chance to purchase an "I Saved the Chief" shirt.
Then on Sunday, May 25, the Classic Sled Round Up, hosted by the Snowmobile Hall of Fame, will begin at 7 a.m. in the St. Germain Community Park. It is one of the largest show and swap meets in the Midwest. Food and beverages will be served by the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club.
The area's largest flea market kicks off its season Monday, May 26. The St. Germain Firefighters Association’s Monday flea market will host more than 520 vendors from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Germain Pavilion and Park. Vendors offer a range of goods, including produce, homemade sweets, jewelry, clothing, décor, collectibles, antiques, yard art, and much more. The flea market is held every Monday, rain or shine, through Labor Day.
Eagle River
The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center will put on its Memorial Day Arts and Crafts Show and Sidewalk Sale on Sunday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Eagle River. This arts and crafts show features artisans from near and far, in addition to food sales and live music. Businesses also will have tables and sale racks outside to offer shoppers additional deals.
Also on Sunday will be the first Sunday Farmers Market from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. just north of the bridge. Farm fresh fruits and vegetables, canned jams, jellies and beyond, live entertainment, food trucks, and unique artisan crafts will all be available. The market is held rain or shine. Vendors accept WIC, senior vouchers, SNAP benefits and gift certificates. While cash is preferred, some vendors also take credit card payments.
Phelps
Following the town's Memorial Day services at the cemetery, the public is invited to step into the past at the Phelps Historical Museum during its annual open house. Refreshments will be available and visitors can take in the historical facts and exhibits the museum has to offer. To learn more, visit phelpshistoricalmuseum.org.
Conover
The Chainskimmer Waterski Team will put on its first show of the season Saturday, May 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Lake Pleasant, located off Highway 45 in Conover. Skilled water skiers will perform tricks, jumps, flips and other stunts during the performance.
Then on Sunday, the Sno-Buddies Snowmobile Club will hold a trail fundraiser from 3 to 7 p.m. at Greenhill's Log Cabin. The event will offer 50/50 raffles, food and more, all while supporting the town's popular winter snowmobile trails.
