About Us

Northwoods Pulse is a local news outlet covering Eagle River, Wisconsin, and its surrounding towns. Our twice-weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays) email newsletter cuts through the noise to deliver high-quality, relevant news and feature stories straight to your inbox for free.

Our mission is to find a sustainable way to keep local news local. We believe this streamlined, digital model is a step in the right direction, but we'll need your help to grow.

Subscribe to support

You won't receive any spam or marketing as a result of subscribing to our newsletter. We will guard your email address vigilantly. By subscribing for free and supporting local journalism, all you'll receive from us is a twice-weekly newsletter, replete with locally relevant news and features.

What's the catch, you ask? There isn't one. This is a reader-supported website and newsletter. Our content is free — zero paywalls — but you can still choose to support local journalism by becoming a paid subscriber (paid options coming soon). If you're unable to support Northwoods Pulse financially, you can still help us by reading our newsletters, sharing our work with your friends, and helping get the word out.

Yeah but who's running this thing?

Hello, I'm Michelle Drew. I'm an award-winning editor, writer and photographer. I know the Northwoods because I've lived and worked here since 1990. And I know the news business because I've spent nearly a decade doing it, most recently as the editor of the Vilas County News-Review. You can reach me at michelle@nwpulse.com.

My husband, Anthony, is a lifelong resident of Vilas County (since 1983) and was raised in Sayner. He built the website and newsletter system, and may contribute writing here and there. He's also been a professional local news and trade magazine editor since 2011.

Our good friend Diane Gunderson is currently designing the Northwoods Pulse logo (coming soon) and all she asked for in return is this shout-out. She's a longtime Vilas County resident, talented graphic designer and artist, former DNR employee, and currently works at Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River.

So this truly is a local labor of love. It's created by people who love the Northwoods, for people who love the Northwoods. Please help to support it by subscribing and reading!
